This guide is written by Echo Water. Echo sells hydrogen water bottles and machines, a machine that also makes alkaline water (the Echo Ultimate), and water filtration systems, so we have products on both sides of this comparison. The science links go to Hydrogen Studies, a research database that Echo Technologies also funds. It reports null results alongside positive ones.
Short answer: they're different things. Alkaline water is defined by its pH, meaning it's less acidic than neutral water (pH above 7). Hydrogen water is defined by a dissolved gas: extra molecular hydrogen (H₂) in otherwise ordinary water, measured in ppm or mg/L. Water can be one, both or neither. People mix them up because water ionizers make water that is alkaline and also contains some hydrogen. Reviewers advise against drinking ionizer water above pH 9.8. Hydrogen water hasn't been shown to treat or prevent any disease, and we make no health claims for alkaline water.
Hydrogen water vs alkaline water, side by side
| Hydrogen water | Alkaline water | |
|---|---|---|
| Defined by | Dissolved hydrogen gas (H₂) | pH above 7 |
| Measured with | Hydrogen reagent drops, a dissolved-hydrogen meter or lab gas analysis, in ppm or mg/L | A pH meter or pH strips |
| How it's made | Electrolysis bottles and machines, magnesium tablets, or sealed cans and pouches filled under pressure | Water ionizers, added alkaline minerals, or naturally mineral-rich water |
| Typical numbers | About 1.6 ppm is the most water holds at normal pressure; sealed, pressurized containers can hold more until opened | Any pH above 7; ionizers offer several settings (level 2 on the Echo Ultimate is about pH 9) |
| After you pour it | The hydrogen escapes over time, so drink it soon after making or opening it | Depends on how it was made, so test the pH when you drink it |
| Cautions | Magnesium tablets add magnesium with every dose | Reviewers advise against drinking ionizer water above pH 9.8; people with impaired kidney function should use it only under medical supervision |

Why hydrogen water and alkaline water get mixed up
A water ionizer uses electrolysis with a membrane, much like a hydrogen water bottle. It splits the water into two streams. The stream from the negative electrode (the cathode) is alkaline and contains some dissolved hydrogen, and that's the water people drink. The other stream is acidic.
So ionizer water is both, but the amounts vary. Its hydrogen content depends on the machine, the water and the settings, and may be well below the levels used in studies; new ionizers typically produce about 0.2–1.2 mg/L (see the format comparison in Hydrogen Studies' tablets guide). Some marketing then blurs the line further by calling alkaline water "hydrogen-rich," or by quoting a negative ORP reading as if it measured hydrogen. It doesn't: ORP is strongly affected by pH, so it can't tell you how much hydrogen is in the water.
Other routes separate the two. Mineral alkaline water has a high pH but no added hydrogen. A PEM/SPE hydrogen water bottle adds hydrogen without meaning to change the pH. Magnesium hydrogen tablets do a little of both: they raise the pH slightly (one study measured 7.9 to 8.1) and leave magnesium in the drink.
What the research looks at
Research on ionized water is where the two overlap. Hydrogen Studies notes that researchers who traced those studies concluded that the water's dissolved hydrogen, not its high pH, explains the effects reported in lab and animal studies. (One of the reviews behind that conclusion was written by authors affiliated with a hydrogen-research nonprofit and with H2 Analytics, a hydrogen-testing company that also tests Echo's products. Hydrogen Studies discloses this.)
For hydrogen water itself, the human evidence is limited: most trials are small and short, and pooled analyses find small effects where they find any. For the full picture, see is hydrogen water real or fake? and hydrogen water side effects.
We haven't reviewed the research on alkaline water itself, so we make no claims for it here. If a product promises health results because of its pH, ask for the evidence behind that promise.
How to tell what's in your glass
- To check alkalinity, use a pH meter or pH strips.
- To check hydrogen, use redox-titration reagent drops made for dissolved hydrogen, or a dedicated dissolved-hydrogen meter. pH strips can't detect hydrogen.
- Skip ORP as a measure of either. It mixes pH and other factors into one reading.
- Test hydrogen at drinking time, because it leaves the water after you pour it.

Which Echo products make which kind of water
- Echo Flask (portable bottle): hydrogen water. Echo says its membrane design keeps the pH neutral. Here's how the Flask works.
- Echo H2 (countertop or under-sink): hydrogen water and filtered water. Echo says it doesn't change the water's pH.
- Echo Flow (under-sink, used after your own filter): hydrogen water, without altering the pH, according to Echo.
- Echo Ultimate (countertop or under-sink): an ionizer that makes hydrogen water, filtered water, and four levels each of alkaline and acidic water. Echo recommends not drinking its alkaline water above level 2 (about pH 9), not drinking the acidic water at all, and asking your physician before drinking alkaline water.
- Filtration systems, including reverse osmosis: filtered water, with no added hydrogen.

Frequently asked questions
Is hydrogen water the same as alkaline water?
No. Alkaline water is defined by a high pH, and hydrogen water by dissolved hydrogen gas. Water ionizers make water that is alkaline and contains some hydrogen, which is why the two get confused, but the hydrogen content of ionizer water varies widely.
Is hydrogen water alkaline?
Not necessarily. Adding hydrogen gas doesn't have to change pH, and a PEM/SPE bottle like the Echo Flask is designed to leave it near neutral, according to Echo. Ionizer water and tablet water are usually somewhat alkaline because of how they're made, not because of the hydrogen.
Does alkaline water contain hydrogen?
Only if it's made in a way that adds hydrogen, such as by an ionizer, and even then the amount varies and fades after pouring. Alkaline water made by adding minerals has no added hydrogen. A pH reading won't tell you either way; use hydrogen reagent drops.
Is it safe to drink alkaline water from an ionizer?
Reviewers advise against drinking ionizer water above pH 9.8, and say people with impaired kidney function should drink it only under medical supervision. If you have a kidney condition or take regular medication, ask your clinician first.
Which is better, hydrogen water or alkaline water?
Hydrogen water hasn't been shown to treat or prevent any disease, and we make no health claims for alkaline water. Where ionized water has shown effects in lab and animal studies, researchers attributed them to its dissolved hydrogen rather than its pH, but human trials of hydrogen water are small and their results are mixed. Choose based on what you want in your glass, and measure it.
